“The experience of picking tea in a tea garden is common, but picking wild tea is rare. We go to Cang Mountain to collect wild tea that no one takes care of, often found in slightly higher forests. But precisely because no one manages it, it grows completely naturally. Moreover, this will be a beautiful trip and picnic in the forest. Finally, we will make it into white tea. The tea-picking months of April to June often coincide with the azalea season.”

Five years ago, while walking on Cang Mountain, I came across a patch of wild tea. The unattended tea trees had grown much taller than me. It was April, the perfect time for tea buds to sprout, and they were so tempting that I used my shirt jacket to carry some home, dried them naturally on a bamboo tray, and turned them into white tea. In this sense, picking wild tea was probably my first gateway to understanding Cang Mountain.

Picking wild tea is a kind of mountain game, a rustic pleasure. When you focus on finding something in the mountains, that feeling of being both focused and mentally free is quite fun.

After picking tea, we will have a tea break together in the pine forest overlooking Erhai Lake. The tea break will be prepared by us.

Afterward, we will take responsibility for bringing back the tea leaves everyone collected, drying them at home, turning them into white tea, and then mailing them to everyone.

If you also want to join us in climbing the mountain to pick wild tea, here’s what you need to know: Wild tea trees are untended and scattered throughout the forest. We search for them one by one, like playing hide-and-seek, and then pluck their buds. It's not easy—I once spent an entire day collecting just one jin (500 grams) of tea. If your only goal is to pick enough tea worth 288 yuan to take home, it might not be the most suitable activity for you 😄.

A wonderful tea-picking experience, fun, relaxing, and not tiring, like immersing yourself in nature for half a day, a spa to rejuvenate the body and mind. We gathered at the foot of Cangshan early in the morning and set off up the mountain with the adorable guide Swallow. After picking tea, we descended the mountain in just half a day. The route was explored and developed by Swallow and her friends over a long period, so reaching the tea-picking spot was very easy. Each pick and basket brought a great sense of achievement.

Along the way, Swallow also introduced everyone to various flowers and herbs. Although I forgot nine out of ten, remembering one is already a gain, right!? Sincerely recommend everyone try this route and experience.

This outdoor adventure was far beyond expectations. Grateful for the attentive companionship of leader Yang Mi and Xiao Xi from Wang Wang Wang.

The gentle texture of grass and trees touched by fingertips, the unique mountain and wildflower fragrance lingering at the nose, and the warm, enthusiastic smile of the Bai grandmother—all become precious memories in the heart.

Very surprised, and I went with a little dog

This Cangshan tea picking experience was so delightful. The guide was very knowledgeable about Cangshan's vegetation and tea culture, and he brought along a soft little dog, making the whole journey very healing.

We venture into the forest to pick wild tea, with guide Yanzi patiently explaining the tea tree's growing environment and harvesting points, making it easy even for beginners like me. In the afternoon, we lay out a picnic cloth at the pine forest viewing platform, arrange the freshly picked leaves, fruits, and snacks, and enjoy forest afternoon tea while overlooking the expansive mountain scenery, filled with the scent of pine needles and tea.
Finally, you can turn the harvested tea into Cangshan White Tea and seal it to take away, completing the full ritual from picking to tasting. The guide is thoughtful and professional, and the little dog running around happily makes this the most unforgettable natural experience in Dali. Highly recommended!
