Das hier produzierte Salz wurde in die südwestliche Region transportiert, sogar bis zur Grenze zwischen Sichuan und Yunnan, und wurde zu einer Ergänzung der alten Tee-Pferde-Straße. Aufgrund seines früheren Wohlstands sind hier reiche historische Gebäude und ein kulturelles Erbe erhalten geblieben. Mit der Einführung des modernen Meersalzes erlebte Nuodeng einen rapiden wirtschaftlichen Niedergang, die traditionelle Architektur und Lebensweise blieb jedoch erhalten. Es gibt noch immer keine Autos, die die Dörfer am Berghang erreichen, und der Transport erfolgt über Maultiere. Draußen verbindet eine schmale Gasse die Häuser der Nachbarn.
